What Are the Long-Term Effects of Anal Sex?

alwaysanalblog: An apprehensive reader asks:

My husband and I really enjoy anal sex. I need a lot of foreplay, and it always kind of hurts at first, but once we get going, it feels really good and makes me climax. I have two questions for you, though. The first is, why does this feel good and give me orgasms? I don’t get the anatomy of this. It seems to me there is nothing in there that should feel this good. Secondly, what are the long-term effects of anal sex? My husband would have it all the time if I let him, but I try to keep it to once a month due to the fact that it takes a lot of time to warm me up and sometimes I’m just not into the initial pain involved. I’m also afraid that, if we do it too frequently, the long-term effects could be negative.

Part of the problem not addressed in the article is that the reason it can hurt at first is because she isn’t having enough anal – once a month simply isn’t frequent enough to get the anus in physical condition for sex.

Still, the response gets it right in one respect:

When it comes to anal sex, you’ve got several feel-good nerves working for you, including the pelvic nerve running to the rectum and the pudendal nerve to the muscles surrounding the anus. So your orgasms back there are perfectly — and anatomically — normal.

The author of the article goes on to list only two possible long term effects. One of them, rough sex, is only temporarily inconvenient, while the other, anal cancer from HPV, is just as likely with vaginal sex and isn’t unique to anal.

They finish with:

But there’s no reason to deny yourselves the pleasures of the back door. Being able to orgasm in different ways is an anatomical perk. Enjoy it.

Message: Numbing Gels for Clit

Anonymous: what type of numbing gels to people typically use on their clit? I picked up a generic brand today and it didn’t really do anything

Orajel is most commonly referenced, but there are a variety of brands/generics people may use. Different ones may use different numbing agents, so look at the active ingredients and see if there’s one that uses a different anesthetic than what you tried, which may have better results.

Message: Making Enemas Sexier

Anonymous: As a female going anal only, I was wondering about enemas. I bought a bulb and will be using that. Is there anything to make an enema sexier? Or just accept it’s part of the lifestyle?

Congratulations on going anal only, first! That’s always a great decision.

Not everyone finds enemas/douching to be necessary, and many people primarily control cleanliness through simple dietary control (a low-fat, low-sugar balanced diet with a healthy amount of fiber does wonders for natural cleanliness) and getting to know their daily digestive routine to know the best times of day to have sex.

For those who do or who want to make extra sure, a small douching is all that you really need, just enough warm water to flush out the rectum without going deeper, repeated a couple times. Done after going to the bathroom each day, you rarely need more, and it can just take a few minutes. So in that sense, it can just be a quick, easy and routine part of the lifestyle. Some see it as another form of warmup, getting clean and starting to relax before play/sex.

There are those who really enjoy enemas as a form of sexual play in and of itself, but that usually involves longer and deeper enemas, which get into cleaning out the colon well beyond the rectum, and aren’t generally as good to do quite as often as it can disrupt the natural balance of the intestinal flora, whereas a simple rectal flush doesn’t do that.
